We often say working as a medical professional is a service to mankind. More than material benefits, Medical Professionals should expect the inner peace that they attain through serving the needy and suffering people who come to them. But at least a few may deviate from this motto. A properly educated medical professional is the one who is also inculcated with Value education! Ayurveda agrees with this opinion. The oldest reference textbook for Medical practitioners - Charak Samhita - advises the following:-
क्वचित् धर्म क्वचित् मैत्री क्वचित् अर्थ क्वचित् यश! कर्माभ्यासं क्वचितश्चेति चिकित्सा नास्ती निष्फला !!
Sometimes, Doctors may attain a sense of self satisfaction by treating someone. Sometimes, they may create new friendships. Sometimes, the return of treatments may be in the form of wealth. Sometimes, they gain lots of fame and popularity in society! Even if, they don't get any of these, and if the treatment is not working well; it's a chance for the Doctor to revise the medical literature and update his knowledge. All such minute experiences create a polished Medical professional!
